The BOOGEYBEAR

“Sometimes, the world feels dark and lonely. But for Noah, everything changes when a shooting star crashes near his quiet mountain town. Out of the stardust emerges a mysterious creature, cute, clumsy, and full of surprises. Together, they form a special bond, through which Noah learns powerful lessons about self-belief, positivity, and the importance of dreaming big. A heartwarming tale that shows how even in the darkest times, we are never truly alone.”

The BOOGEYBEAR Whaaa?

I can’t tell you how many nights I’d wake at 2 a.m. to find one of my little ones standing silently at my bedside, freaking the daylights out of me like something straight out of a scary movie hallway scene. Haha.

But as the story behind The BOOGEYBEAR took shape, so did a deeper sense of compassion for all those families out there. For parents with sick kids at home or in the hospital. For anyone who wishes they could be by their child’s side to comfort them through the night.

So, I created The BOOGEYBEAR, a guardian in the dark, a whisper of hope when things feel uncertain. My wish is that kids everywhere sleep a little more peacefully with their new nighttime friend.

Author: Mikey James

Growing up, I disliked reading books and if you asked me how many I’ve read, the number would be pretty sad. It’s something I genuinely regret. Maybe that was part due to my ADHD, I don’t know. So it’s odd that I’d set out to write a book, let alone be an author.

The Boogeybear origin started from the simple question I asked myself, “Why can’t I write a book?” But trust me when I say I am the worst at spelling, writing, and illustrating, so it makes total sense for me to think I can write a book! At least my kiddos had my back. But I knew the one thing I did have was an imagination. I love to dream things up, that’s what I am good at..

Every morning I would take BART to work (San Francisco transit, kinda like the New York subway I guess, I mean it did go underground for a bit). Everyday I thought to myself how can I use this time (hour to work, hour home) to write a book. Sleeping on transit was always a good idea lol, but I thought I could use my time better. Listen to music was great but again I could use the time better. Working on my laptop before and after work didn’t sound like fun, so I thought I will use the time to write a children’s book. Brilliant! So I opened up my notepad on my iPhone and put whimsical fairy type music music in my ears and was taken to a far away land.

Everyday new ideas spun through my mind as I frantically tried to write down fragmented sentences because I didn’t want to forget as it would surely slip my mind. At this point it started to become more clear of the adventure and characters I was dreaming up. At the same time I thought about why I was writing the story. What was the purpose? Then I thought about my own kids and how sometimes being in separate rooms by themselves could be scary. What if you were an only child, how different would that be? I thought in the middle of the night when all was silent and maybe a storm started up that it can be a very lonely world. So, I came up with The BOOGEYBEAR to be a companion, a friend, a glimmer of hope, a glimmer of joy, someone to talk too, someone to take an adventure with.

I am a perfectionist and sometimes that is a bad thing because nothing can ever be perfect. But I believe in making quality books (I wouldn’t back something that I didn’t believe in), that are organic from the heart stories that make kids believe in themselves and to never stop laughing or having fun, because at the end of the day we are the only ones who can spread love and laughter.

I hope you like The BOOGEYBEAR and I am so grateful for you.

With gratitude,

Mikey James
